After reading this post, I followed up with my local bicycle dealer. They have a Sigma Sport BC800 digital speedometer/odometer/computer for around $30.00.

The company says this about it:

" Odometer records up to 99,999 miles or kilometers"

" Speed reads to 183 miles per hour or 300 kilometers per hour. "

" Accepts wheels with a circumference of 1 mm to 3999 mm or a diameter of .5 mm to 127 cm (50 inches). Ideal for non-bicycle applications such as motorcycles, carts, mopeds, scooter, road equipment, etc. "

It has a trip odometer and clock will keep track of maximum speed, average speed, and will indicate when you are traveling faster or slower than your average speed. It can be hardwired or adapted to "wireless" installation.

All in all, the only thing that seems to be a shortcoming is that the display is not lighted.

I found a company on the internet that sells this item ... (they seem to be having a sale right now!). The link below is to their webpage.
